Ezekiel 12:1-14:11; Hebrews 7:1-17; Psalm 105:37-45; Proverbs 27:3

We live some of the most comfortable lives in history. We live in nice homes with beautiful landscaping and have more food than we could ever hope to eat. Living with such ease can cause us to miss our desperate need for God. We can feel comfortable and content in what we have seemingly achieved for ourselves rather than having a desperation for God.
The same situation was experienced by Judah prior to the exile. Ezekiel specifically calls out the political and spiritual leadership of the nation for their failure to trust in God. They trusted in their power and their false belief that peace would continue rather than trusting in God. When we trust in ourselves rather than God it will always lead to humiliation and disaster. For Judah it meant exile and for us, it means loss of intimacy with God and a failure to experience the life Christ made available to us.

Rather than self-reliance we need to cultivate humility in our lives. We need to remember that we are just as needy as the Exodus generation who had to rely on God for quail, water, and for all their needs to be met. God alone is the one who can meet our deepest needs. We need Christ to be our high priest and give us access to our Heavenly Father. So, rather than trusting in ourselves we need to rely on God in every situation of life.

Father God, thank you for giving us Jesus as our great High Priest. Thank you that he came to love us, die for us, and lives forever to make intercession for us. Amen.

Question: How can you cultivate a reliance on God and a spirit of humility in your life?
