Ezekiel 10:1-11:25; Hebrews 6:1-20; Psalm 105:16-36; Proverbs 27:1-2

Hebrews has been continually teaching us about the surpassing greatness of Jesus. Yet the author is concerned that we might intellectually assent to Jesus’ greatness without it making a difference in our lives. We can know something is great but not trust it. It is not hearing the message that makes the difference but faith.

Verses 7-8 pick up one of Jesus' famous sayings to describe the necessity of applying God's truth to our lives. If we receive God's truth, apply it, and produce "a crop" we will be blessed but if we hear and then continually produce "thorns and thistles" we will be cursed and burned. Failure to apply and ultimately failure to have faith leaves us apart from God and separated from him not only on earth but for all eternity. As you read Ezekiel and Psalm 105, we were also encountered by the greatness of God. We saw the amazing cherubim in all of their grandeur and yet they are nothing compared to Jesus. Psalm 105 describes the power of God’s work during the plagues against Egypt and yet that is only a fraction of his power. As we know God more we should continually be amazed by his greatness and power, not only acknowledging it but trusting in it, and living our lives by it.

Father God, help me not to be just a hearer of your word but a doer also. May your truth transform my life through the power of your Spirit and help me to grow to become more like Christ. Help me to live it out and make you known to others. Amen.

Question: How should Jesus’ greatness make a difference in our lives?
