Flee. A call to flee comes when there is a recognition that something devastating is coming. It may be a fire, the imminent threat of a hurricane, or sin, but in all cases the response is to be the same: flee.
The call to flee in 2 Timothy 2:22 and similar commands in 1 Timothy and 1 Corinthians come from recognizing the devastating power of sin and second, the possibility of refuge and escape that is found in Christ. Sin is a power that, outside of Christ, sends people to hell and, even for believers, can reap devastating consequences. Therefore, we must run from it. We must not coddle, rationalize, or excuse sin but must flee from it.
As we run away from it, we must examine what we are running to. If you don't have a destination in mind, there is the possibility that you may run right back to where you started. Paul exhorts Timothy to run to/pursue "righteousness, faith, love and peace." He is calling Timothy to run to a life that honors God. He is to run to Christ and through the power of the Spirit experience the abundant life, free from sin, which is available to him. When can always choose this path because God is with us. Since God’s power is available to us through the Spirit, no matter how exhausted we may feel, God can enable our feet to run. This has always been God’s promise to his people, his presence means power. He made this promise to Judah through Jeremiah but the people chose to run to other gods rather than the one true God. We will face daily temptations to run to things other than God but we must always remember his presence, his power, and the life which is available only through him.
God my Father, I confess my sin. I confess that I do not hate sin as I should, and I do not flee from it as quickly as I ought to. Please forgive my sins and strengthen me to run to you. Thank you for your grace and help me to use that grace to walk in the life which Christ through the Spirit has made available to me. Amen.
Question of the day: How can you do a better job of both fleeing from sin and running to Christ?
