Jeremiah 39:1-41:18; 2 Timothy 1:1-18; Psalm 90:1-91:16; Proverbs 26:1-2
In order for us to be the disciples God wants us to be, we desperately need Christ-centered relationships to help us grow. We need people to sharpen us, encourage us, call out our sin, and love us well. Our spiritual maturity is almost always going to be connected to the type of people we surround ourselves with. That is why small groups are such a critical component of our discipleship strategy. In these groups, we can connect with other believers who can love, encourage us, and strengthen our faith as we do the same for them.
After the fall of Jerusalem, Gedaliah was appointed governor, and many Israelites began to return. Gedaliah was cautioned by a friend that someone was seeking to assassinate him, but he ignored the warning. His failure to heed the wisdom of others ultimately cost him his life.
In contrast, Timothy listened to the faith of his grandmother and mother and became a leader in the early church. He didn't reject the wisdom of others but allowed the truth which was lovingly shared to transform his life. In the same way, we need to consider the voices which we are listening to. Are they pointing us to Christ or away from him? Are we heeding the wisdom of others or living in an isolated bubble?
Father God, thank you for community. Thank you for the wise men and women which you have placed in my life to help me to grow. Help me to humbly allow others to speak into my life and heed their wisdom. Help me to grow to become more like Christ. Amen.
Question: How can you more effectively allow others to speak truth into your life?
