Jeremiah 37:1-38:28; 1 Timothy 6:1-21; Psalm 89:38-52; Proverbs 25:28

Buy, buy, buy! We live in a culture that is obsessed with material consumption. The broken human heart has always struggled with the continual pursuit of more and we can see that play out in the instructions of Paul to Timothy. Paul wants Timothy as a leader and follower of Christ to understand the pitfalls that money and materialism bring.
He first wants Timothy to cultivate the practice of contentment. He must gain the perspective that as he wasn't born with material possessions so he will not take them to eternity. Therefore, he should focus on things that are eternal.

Second, he wants Timothy to understand that the pursuit of wealth is foolishness. If our goal is to become rich, we will compromise our morals, relationships, and walk with God in order to get what we want. Therefore, we must learn to make our love and pursuit not money but God and others.

Third, we must confess and repent of greed. We must acknowledge that even as believers, as Americans, we struggle with the same issues of materialism and greed. We must flee from these attitudes and recognize that true life is not found in the abundance of possessions but in a knowing God.

Father God, I confess greed and lack of contentment. Help me to not look to the things of this world to satisfy, but you. Help me to know that true security is found in you and not in the size of my bank account. Help me to fix my eyes on the eternal and thus ultimately fix them on you. Amen.

Question: Where do you see greed and materialism in your life?
