Jeremiah 31:27-32:44; 1 Timothy 3:1-16; Psalm 88:1-18; Proverbs 25:20-22
There was an older man in the church that I used to regularly meet with before he passed away and he challenged me to become a more effective leader. He would say that everyone was a leader, the only question was whether they led well or not. Consider this for yourself. As you think through the spheres of influence that God has given to you, how well are you leading?
1&2 Timothy and Titus are called the Pastoral Epistles. They describe what an effective leader for God looks like, with a specific focus on what it means to be a leader (elder or deacon) in the church. Timothy begins chapter three by speaking of the pursuit of leadership as a good thing. God values contentment but at the same time, it is a good thing to desire greater influence and leadership, as long as we are doing it for God's glory and not for our own gain or fame. The rest of the chapter goes on to describe the fact that the pursuit of leadership should be accompanied by a particular type of life.
A leader's character, relationships, behavior, abilities, home life, and track record all need to be evident in order for them to be placed in a position of leadership. It is an honor to be a leader but at the same time, it opens you up to greater judgment (James 3:1) and spiritual attack. As you lead at home, work, or church, make sure that your life and leadership reflect the God you are leading people to. God is far more concerned about our character than our giftedness, far more about our focus on him than the results we might accomplish, and far more focused on our hearts than the externals of life.
Father God, help me to lead well for your glory. Help me to be an influence for you in my home, neighborhood, job, and church. Grow my character, so as I lead, my life will reflect Christ, and point people to him. Amen.
Question of the day: Which one of the qualities described in 1 Timothy 3:2-11 do you need to ask God to help you grow?
