Jeremiah 19:1-21:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:4-28; Psalm 82:1-8; Proverbs 25:9-10
Judgment is coming. When we hear that phrase we may think of some fire and brimstone preacher in a country church, but it is actually a critical truth for us to embrace. Judgment truly is coming.
Jeremiah tells Judah that judgment in the form of the Babylonian army was coming because of their sins. Their only hope was the counterintuitive response of leaving the safety of their walled city and surrendering. Otherwise, destruction and judgment would come upon them. We see the same message spoken by Paul in 1 Thessalonians. God’s judgment is coming, this time not at the hands of an earthly army, but at the hands of Jesus himself at his return. Our response is to be alert to this reality and live in light of Christ’s return. Those around us may be “asleep” to this truth and think that Christ coming back is an absurd myth, but the reality is that judgment is coming. 1 Thessalonians 5 tells us some of the ways we should live considering the judgment to come. We are to proclaim Christ’s salvation to all we can, encourage each other with the hope of Christ’s return, and live out of the joy, thanks, patience, and peace that God has made available to us now. We must not be asleep but awake to what is coming.
Father God, help me to live in light of Christ’s return. Give me boldness to share Christ with all you put in front of me since they will face judgment soon. Help me to proclaim Christ, live for Christ, and live in light of eternal realities. Amen.
Question of the day: How should the reality that judgment is coming change the way we live?
