Jeremiah 16:16-18:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3; Psalm 81:1-16; Proverbs 25:6-8
God is omnipresent. He is everywhere and therefore can never be escaped from. This truth can either bring us great comfort or epic shame. Jeremiah describes Judah as thinking that their sin and idolatry could somehow be hidden from God. This is foolishness because as God proclaims, “My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes.” God is with us and sees everything, so when we consider the sin we have committed today or this week, we may suddenly feel a sense of shame that God has witnessed all of our actions. What is amazing though, is that he knows all our sin and still loves us. So, his presence in our lives can bring us great hope and encouragement. God is the one person who knows everything about us and loves us more than we can fathom. His presence should propel us to pursue holiness and his glory.
Knowing God’s presence, Jeremiah chooses not to try to hide from God but instead turn to him. In chapter 18 when everyone around him seems to be against him, Jeremiah can trust that God is with him and for him. This thinking should transform the way we live. 1 Thessalonians 4 describes this changed life through the indwelling power of the Spirit. God’s Spirit will never leave us so we can always walk in his wisdom, power, and holiness. This experience of the Spirit now is just a taste of what we will experience in eternity as Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 that “we will be with the Lord forever.” Our ultimate destiny is to experience God’s presence with us in eternity, but we can walk today in the confidence that comes from knowing that God is already with us.
God my Father, thank you that you are my ever present fortress and refuge. Help me to learn to run to you with my problems and trials and experience the rest that you offer. Thank you that you are always with me, will never leave me, and always love me. Amen.
