Jeremiah 10:1-11:23; Colossians 3:18-4:18; Psalm 78:56-72; Proverbs 24:28-29

If we’re not careful, we conform to the ways of those around us. Their values become our values and their behavior becomes our actions. We see this again and again throughout the Scriptures and see it proclaimed in Jeremiah 10. Israel is told to “not learn the ways of the nations…for the customs of the peoples are worthless.” We can easily see how foolish the conforming of Israel was to the idolatry of the nations but can we see the ways we are tempted to conform to the values of our culture. The pursuit of wealth, comfort, personal freedom, and pleasure easily become ours. Therefore, we need to ensure that our lives match the values of God and not the values of America.

Notice how our lives should look different in Colossians 3-4 -- our families, our workplaces, our speech, and our relationships should all be different. It is easy to conform to the way that others work, talk, and relate to each other, but God calls us to something different. We are to live transformed rather than conformed to the world. So let us put ourselves in front of God, allow his Spirit to change us, and reflect God in the way we live.

Father God, thank you for the gift of your Spirit that allows me to live transformed. Help me to walk in your ways rather than the ways I see all around me. Help me to live for your glory. Amen.

Question of the day: Where do you see your lives being conformed to the pattern of the world around us and how can you live in a transformed way in that area?
