Jeremiah 8:8-9:26; Colossians 3:1-17; Psalm 78:32-55; Proverbs 24:27
We need to be honest about our situation in life. I was recently on a flight where a woman claimed to value God in her life but was traveling for the express purpose of committing sin. She said one thing, but her life revealed a different set of beliefs. It is therefore critical that we honestly assess where we are in life.
Jeremiah speaks of Israel believing that they were fine when they were headed for judgment because of their sin. They thought something about their lives that was not true. Instead, they should have acknowledged their sin, confessed, repented, and turned back to God. Paul describes that type of life in Colossians 3. He tells us that understanding who we are is critical to our behavior. Verse 1 says that we have "been raised with Christ”. Since this is who we are, we should live in a way that reflects this reality. We are to be those who clothe ourselves in the character of Christ. We are to discard our old way of living and walk in the new path which God has made available to us. So we must set our thoughts on things of God, we are to put to death our sinful behaviors and clothe ourselves in the love, compassion, kindness, humility, and forgiveness of Christ. When our clothes start to wear out we discard them for new ones, and since our old self has been removed we are to wear the new clothes of Christ and show him to the world.
Father God, thank you that you have made me new in Christ. Help me to understand who I am so I know how to live. Help me not to live in my old ways of sin and selfishness but in ways of love and humility, that bring glory to you. Amen.
