October 6
Jeremiah 6:16-8:7; Colossians 2:8-23; Psalm 78:1-31; Proverbs 24:26
God functions like a GPS for our lives. When we navigate our cars in unfamiliar areas we often pull up directions on our smartphones so we can get to our destination. We follow the commands to turn right and then left at the next light and continue for 5 miles. Typically if we respond appropriately to the directions we will arrive at the right place, at the right time. Yet the need to listen to God as he tells us how to live is even more critical. The consequences are not showing up late to an event but an eternity apart from God. We will not find ourselves driving around in circles but driving our lives off a proverbial cliff with disastrous, eternal consequences. Therefore, it is critical that we learn to listen and respond to God.
God is concerned about our hearing. Not with whether we can hear high-pitched sounds or a whisper from across the room or GPS directions, but whether we can hear him. Psalm 78 begins with an exhortation to "hear my teaching" and Jeremiah 6:17-19 has a repeated refrain to "hear”. Jeremiah is preaching to an audience that will not listen. They don't mind going through external religious actions, but they are unconcerned about hearing from God. It is so easy to go through the motions and not really listen to God. We can read the One Year Bible (we have made it to October 6!), attend church services, serve in various ways, and still miss God. This is the warning of all our passages today. Pay attention and listen to God! Jeremiah warns us not to miss God in religion, Paul warns us in Colossians not to miss God in tradition and Asaph not to miss God in his actions. We need to desperately pray for ears to hear what God is saying to us and the ability to do what he says.
Father God, help me to hear from you. Help me not to miss you in the busyness of life, religious activities, and other good things. Help me to never be satisfied with anything less than meeting with you. Help me to hear from you and be led by you today. Amen.
Question: How can you better listen to what God is saying?
