Jeremiah 2:31-4:18; Colossians 1:1-17; Psalm 76:1-12; Proverbs 24:21-22

We are forgetful people. When was the last time you misplaced your wallet, keys, or even a child as you were going about your day? Not only can we forget material things, but we can also forget God. Jeremiah tells Israel three times in this book that they have "forgotten" God. When Israel forgets God it is not that they don't remember God's existence but rather that they turn to other things for satisfaction, fulfillment, comfort, and purpose. They look to other things to be the foundation of their life, rather than God. They live as practical atheists even though they would acknowledge the existence of God but fail to allow his existence to make any practical difference in their lives.

Colossians 1 tells us why it is that we should never forget God and should always make him the center of our lives. Christ is greater than anything else as the one who is above all of creation, made all things, sustains all things, and deserves glory from everything. He is the head of the church, he is the means of eternal life, and the truly divine one. Therefore, we are to keep our eyes upon him, have our thoughts consumed with him, and live for his glory.

God my Father, thank you for the gift of your Son. Thank you that he is my king, creator, and the one who sustains my life. Help me to know you more deeply and do all things for your glory. Amen.

Question: What does your forgetfulness of God look like? How can you do a better job remembering him?
