Isaiah 28:14-30:11; Galatians 3:23-4:31; Psalm 62:1-12; Proverbs 23:19-21

You probably never thought that a degree in geology would be helpful for reading the Bible, but as we look at Isaiah and Psalms today there is a lot of discussion about rocks. First, Isaiah describes God as providing a cornerstone upon which to build our lives. This stone in construction becomes that upon which everything else is compared. Our lives are similarly meant to be squared up to God and lived in comparison to him. This passage is used by Jesus in the New Testament to show that he is the only source for our salvation. Further, God is the rock upon which all of David’s life is built in Psalm 62. He repeats the line, “He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” Any foundation for our lives will fail us, but God is the permanent, eternal foundation for our lives.

Galatians does not use geology language but points us to the same fact that God alone is the source of our salvation and life. Eternal life is not earned through obedience to the law or religious observance, but only through faith in Christ. So let us always live with Christ as our rock, cornerstone, and firm foundation.

Father God, thank you that you will never fail me. Thank you for providing a firm foundation for my life. Help me to build my life upon you rather than any things of this world. Thank you for being my rock when everything else is sinking sand. Amen.

Question of the day: When God is not the foundation of your life, what else do you turn to for security?
