Song of Solomon 5:1-8:14; 2 Corinthians 9:1-15; Psalm 51:1-19; Proverbs 22:24-25
Love is powerful. What we love shapes our hearts and our lives. The things we love draw our attention, energy, and time. So what is it that we love?
Song of Songs describes the power of romantic love. We see the woman chasing after her man and longing for him. Similarly, we see a man who is willing to sacrifice everything in order to be with his lover. A common statement of a wedding ceremony is the commitment to forsake all others. Love in a marriage is sacrificial, singular, and all-encompassing. Therefore, we need to be very careful who we marry and what we love. Scripture continually warns against being unequally yoked because no earthly relationship will impact those of us who marry like that relationship.
2 Corinthians 9 describes the power of love for the church. When we view the church as our family and care deeply for our brothers and sisters in Christ, we will find ourselves giving generously and sacrificially towards their needs. When we love others it always calls us to stop focusing on ourselves and begin living for the needs of others. The more we love, the more we will be transformed. So let us open our lives to God’s love and allow it to overflow out of us onto the lives of others.
Father God, help me to love others like you love me. Help me to love in a way that reflects your character and your glory to the world. Continue to help me to be conformed to the likeness of Jesus. Amen.
Question: What steps do you need to take for your love to more clearly reflect God’s love?
