JOB 26:1-29:25
A theme found throughout the Bible is that of idolatry. This is the temptation to trust in anything other than God as the ultimate source of our security. In the Bible it is actual false deities, while today, it is often looking to money, power, or pleasure for ultimate satisfaction. Regardless of the externals of idolatry, the heart condition has always been the same and results in opposition to God and thus judgment. Job describes how all idols ultimately fail in chapter 27. If someone looks to family for fulfillment (common in the ancient near east), death will still come and they will be forgotten in time; if money, it will ultimately be passed down and used by others; if earthly security like homes, they will crumble and fall like a "moth's cocoon." Anything we turn to for life, other than God, will fail us when we end up in the grave. He who dies with the most toys, still dies and will stand before God in judgment.
Father God, help me to turn to you for life. Help me to not look to the things of this world to satisfy, but to you alone. Thank you that you offer me peace, joy, purpose, love, and fulfillment; so help me to rest in you. Amen.
