GENESIS 36:1-19; 1 CHRONICLES 1:35-37; GENESIS 36:20-30; 1 CHRONICLES 1:38-42; GENESIS 36:31-43; 1 CHRONICLES 1:43-2:2
We are introduced to the mighty nation of Edom in our reading today. In their times, these descendants of Esau would have great strength, power, and political prowess. We spend fifty-nine verses recounting their generations, chiefs, and accomplishments, then we have two verses at the end that speak to the sons of Israel. Just thinking about today's reading, you would assume that Edom was the important nation and Israel was an afterthought. Often, we may feel like the church is similarly obscure compared to nations and cultures around the globe. Yet nations will fade, and the church will remain, in the same way that Edom is a distant, dead empire while Israel still prevails. If we look at things using the glasses of our world, we may feel like God is losing and we are soon to be defeated, but when we look at God's word, his promises, and his power we know that the church will never be defeated and because of Jesus the people of God will be victorious. Therefore, let us trust in what is not seen instead of what our limited physical eyes can behold.
Father God, help me to see how you are at work in our world and in my life. I can easily find myself becoming discouraged when I look around me but help me to be encouraged knowing that you have not left your people and that you are still bringing about your kingdom on earth, just as it is in heaven. Amen.
Question: Besides continuing with your One Year Bible reading, how can you gain better eyesight for what God is doing in you and around you?
