GENESIS 28:6-30:24

Everyone wants to be loved. This desire crosses cultures, genders, and times as we see from our reading today. Esau, Leah, and Rachel all seek to find love and acceptance through a variety of means. Esau adds a non-Canaanite bride to his collection of wives thinking this will cause him to be loved by his parents. Leah certainly would have dealt with an inferiority complex. She had such "weak eyes" (surely a euphemism for being unattractive) that she had to be married through deception. She then sought to earn her husband's love by producing children. Rachel sought approval and value through children as well since her infertility made her feel unloved. Yet all these pursuits were unable to satisfy their desire to be loved. Their attempts were never enough to fill the void in their hearts. Ultimately only God can shower the love we seek upon us. His love is unconditional, unearned, and therefore always present. When we feel unloved, unworthy, or worthless we can turn to God and rest in the love that he has for us.

Father God, thank you that I am loved by you. Thank you that all my doubts can be washed away in the death of Jesus. You definitively proved your love in the sending, death, and resurrection of your son Jesus. Thank you for your great love. Amen.

Question: What keeps you from believing and receiving God's love?
