GENESIS 1:1-3:24

The first two chapters of Genesis are like the beginning of a traditional roller coaster ride. These chapters take you up, up, up to see a grand, beautiful perspective of what God has made. You see God's hand creating a "good"/"very good" world. Yet like the rest of a roller coaster, chapter 3 takes us down a steep drop. We find ourselves plummeting toward disaster as Adam and Eve rebel against God. Suddenly the "very good" world God made descends into disaster. Sin, death, enmity, pain, and toil all descend upon God's world. Yet even in the midst of the bleakness there is hope. Genesis 3:15 is called the proto-evangelium (first Gospel) and it shows that sin, death, and disaster will not be the end of the story. No matter how broken the world, or our lives, God's grace and power is greater. God promises right after the sinful fall of humanity that he will send someone who will come to "crush" the head of Satan and destroy sin and death. This person, Jesus, came so that we could find forgiveness and have life like God originally intended. As we read through the Bible this year, it is ultimately a story that points us to God. It deals with the real brokenness of the world and the tragedies we face but points us always to a savior and a hope. As we read as a church family this year, may we be filled with the unexplainable hope that only our gracious God can offer.

Father God, thank you that my sin has not permanently separated me from you and from your life. Thank you that through your son, Jesus, I can have eternal life. Thank you for the forgiveness and salvation that I have in You. Amen.

Question to consider: How have you seen God's grace in the midst of tragedy?
