Revelation 7:1-10:11

Judgment is the proper response to evil. Without judgment, evil would remain forever and Satan would win. God’s wrath and judgment consume much of Revelation. The first acts of judgment are unleashed through the opening of seals, the second group accompanied by trumpet blasts, and the final ones emptied out of bowls. The judgments are eerily like the plagues that struck Egypt before the Exodus but on a far larger scale. The first four trumpet blasts lead to destruction on land, water, and sky. There is nothing in creation that is not touched by judgment. It is as if creation itself is coming undone, but at this point in the book of Revelation, the judgment is just beginning. The fifth and sixth trumpets only ramp up the judgment, as they bring locusts to torment people for five months, and 1/3rd of humanity is killed.

We may find these pictures of judgment staggering, but ultimately, they are the proper and right responses of a just God to evil in the world. All we read will happen one day, which should lead us to share Christ with those far from him and encourage us to live for God’s glory today.

Father God, thank you for being a just God. Help me to share Christ with others today so that they might experience an eternity with him. Amen.

How would you help someone to understand that judgment is a right and proper response for God?
