Jude 1:1-25; Revelation 1:1-2:29

When we consider the Jesus of Christmas, we picture a young child being held by Mary and Joseph in a rough stable. In our reading today we are introduced to a different side of Jesus in Revelation 1:9-20. Here Jesus is pictured in a robe with a golden sash around him. His hair is white like wool and his eyes are like fire. His feet are like glowing bronze and his voice is like rushing water. In his hand he holds stars and out of his mouth comes a sword, while his face is like the sun. Upon seeing this Jesus, John is unable to even stand at his power and grandeur.

If we only recognize the Jesus of Christmas, we may feel like he is cute, controllable, and quaint. But the perspective of Revelation is Jesus is a powerful king that no one can withstand. To respond rightly to Jesus, we need to see him for who he is. As we read through Revelation, I encourage you to allow it to expand your understanding of the greatness of the "Son of Man," Jesus, and choose to live for who he is.

Father God, help me to see Jesus as the powerful one he is. Help me to understand that you are king and in control of all things, and I am not. Help me to do all things for your glory. Amen.

How does Revelation 1:9-20 help you to gain insight into the person and character of Jesus?
