1 Corinthians 4:1-7:40

When we look into a mirror, we see an image of ourselves, but do we see ourselves rightly? Some people look into a mirror and, due to body dysmorphic disorder or negative self-esteem, are unable to see themselves accurately. Similarly, Paul is concerned the church in Corinth is filled with people who cannot see who they are. He is afraid they are filled with stunning pride that gives them an inability to see God’s greatness and their own needs. He challenges them to follow his example as a servant of Christ and to "not be puffed up" (1 Corinthians 4:6).

Rather than boasting about sin, they should see, "You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies" (1 Corinthians 6:20). When they look in the mirror, they should see they are God's. They are his servants and as such should be concerned with his desires. When you look at yourself, what do you see? Do you see with God's perspective or the world's? Let us see as God sees, love as God loves, and live for his glory.

Father God, help me to see and live rightly. Help me not to judge as the world judges, live as the world lives, or live for myself; instead, help me live for you and your glory. Amen.

How can you learn to view yourself through God's eyes?
