Luke 11:14-12:34

We live in what is potentially the most materialistic culture in history. We may feel like Jesus' world is vastly different from ours. Yet one of the most common issues he dealt with was money; thus, materialism. He, not surprisingly, speaks to our world in his teachings from 2000 years ago. Jesus' warnings about material possessions in Luke 12 are stark and clear. Jesus warns against greed in Luke 12:15 and the idea that happiness comes through material prosperity. We can purchase more stuff, but it will never truly bring satisfaction. Similarly, he wants us to understand true wealth is found in one's relationship with God and not anything the world can offer. True wealth is that which lasts, and that can only be received from the hands of our eternal God. Finally, we are not to worry or be afraid concerning material things, including food, clothes, and life; instead, we are to be focused on God's kingdom.

Our eyes are to be focused on God and things of him rather than anything this world can offer. God has made a beautiful, though now broken world for us to enjoy, but our ultimate satisfaction is to come from him. We need to continually remind ourselves that God alone will satisfy and he is what we are to delight in.

Father God, help me to know you alone will satisfy the longings of my heart. Help me to realize nothing this world offers can bring fulfillment like you. Amen.

Do you find yourself consumed by greed, worry, or fear about material things? How can you begin to overcome this?
