2 Timothy 2:1-4:18

Yesterday we discovered that we are all runners and today in 2 Timothy we discover we are all soldiers, athletes, and farmers. We are to be soldiers in the sense that we focus on the marching orders of our commanding officer, Jesus. For an army to function well, it must be a cohesive unit with a clear mission. As Christians, we are to be the same. We are to be concerned with things of our commander rather than our own interests. We are to obey everything God says rather than choosing our own path. Similarly, we are to be athletes. We are to be focused on following the rules of life. These rules have been given by God and abundant life is found in conformity to his ways. Finally, we are to be farmers. We are to be disciplined and hardworking knowing that a future reward awaits. We can embrace suffering in the moment because of the glory that is coming.

God provides us with these examples as a framework for our identity. These illustrations help us better understand how we are to live. So, let us live as the soldiers, athletes, and farmers we are.

Father God, thank you for the calling you have placed on my life to serve you. Help me to live according to your ways and commands, rather than my wants and desires. Amen.

What is one step you can take today to be a more intentional soldier, athlete, and farmer?
