John 3:1-4:45; Luke 3:19-20

The Old Testament was a series of signposts pointing people to Jesus. Now that he has come, Jesus uses every opportunity and conversation to point people to himself. He points religiously confused Jewish men like Nicodemus to himself and religiously confused Samaritan women to himself. Jesus saw every relationship and interaction as an opportunity. As he talked with Nicodemus, he used the image of being born again to help him understand the necessity of Jesus for eternal life. Then to the unnamed Samaritan woman, he used the image of living water. He wanted her to understand that nothing this world offers satisfies like Jesus.

In both cases, Jesus went from the need of the listener to himself as the ultimate solution. He started with where they were and built a bridge to himself. As we interact with people may our conversations look the same. May we help people to move from where they are to finding life in Christ. May we learn to be skilled bridge builders, taking people to Jesus.

Father God, thank you that through Jesus I am born again and experience living water. Help me to share what I have received with others today. Amen.

As you think about the people in your life, what image/metaphor might help you to show that Jesus is what they truly need?
