2 Kings 1:1-18, 3:1-27; 1 Kings 22:41-49; 2 Chronicles 20:31-37; 1 Kings 22:50; 2 Chronicles 21:1-4; 2 Kings 8:16-22; 2 Chronicles 21:5-7

There is a common adage that “the only constant in life is change.” For followers of Christ, this applies only to the external circumstances of life, as God is always constant and true. Israel's throne transitions from Ahab to Ahaziah and then quickly to Joram/Jehoram as their leader. Judah transitions from Jehoshaphat to Jehoram (yes, 2 Jehorams!) and Elijah passes his mantle of leadership to Elisha. Outside of the swirling political intrigue, battles, and chaos of the nation, there is only one constant─God. The prophets may change, but His word does not. Kings may rise and fall, but God remains enthroned over all.

It is vital for us to use this truth as an anchor for our lives so the tides of life do not sweep us away. The focus of 2 Kings moves from political power to the prophets, to where true power lies, in God. What seems impressive in the eyes of the world pales in comparison to the power and work of God. The amazing thing is he continues to do his magnificent, miraculous work through people like us.

Father God, help me to be used by you today. Help me to glorify you and carry out your purposes amidst every circumstance. As everything else changes in life, thank you for always remaining constant and faithful. Amen.

How can you be used by God today to do his work?
