Proverbs 20:1-22:16

One distinction of Judaism and Christianity among world religions is the way they value work. When Adam and Eve were created in God's image, even prior to the fall, they were created to work. We will spend over 20% of our waking life working, so it is vital that we honor God during this time. To do this we need to first be people who work hard (Provers 20:4). God has designed the world to bring forth sustenance through work. We are probably not working on a farm, but we are working to earn a paycheck to buy food and pay bills. Second, we are to work with integrity (Proverbs 20:23). The way we do work can be righteous or evil, wise or foolish, so we need to consider our motives, our actions, and the way we go about our work. Third, wealth should not be the sole purpose of our work. For most people, they work to gain enough money to retire and be done with work, but we see throughout Proverbs the fleeting nature of wealth (20:21, 21:6).

Work is one of the ways we can honor God and not just earn a paycheck. So, as you consider work today ask yourself the questions: Am I working hard? Am I working with integrity? Am I working for more than a paycheck?

Father God, help me to honor you with my work. You have called me to work; so thank you for my job, opportunities to serve, and ways to be about your kingdom work. Help me to glorify you and bless others through what I do today. Amen.

Of the three questions at the end of the devotional, which one is most pertinent for you to consider?
