Proverbs 17:1-19:29

Relationships are critical in shaping who we are. They can shape us for good or evil, bless us or leave us with scars. As we look at the Proverbs, we see how wisdom should shape our relationships. Proverbs 17:1 tells us material possessions are nothing compared to healthy relationships of love and peace. If we pursue what we value, then we should pursue Christ-centered relationships with intentionality. Our relationships should be filled with service, love, warmth, grace, and truth.

On the other hand, to quarrel is like opening a dam that will crush and destroy everything that is downstream from the source (17:14). Further, if we fail to live out Proverbs 17:9, then bitterness and division will creep in. We will hold on to grudges rather than walking in forgiveness and love. If we want to experience true friendships which are marked by permanence especially in the face of difficult circumstances (17:17, 19:20), we will need to constantly learn to walk in forgiveness and confession. We need to pursue these types of friendships and be that type of friend to others.

Father God, thank you for the gift of friendship. Thank you for the people you have placed in my life to point me to you. Help me to cultivate these Christ-centered relationships and be a friend to others. Amen.

How can you be a better friend this week?
