Psalm 128, 129, 130, 132, 134, 135
Today is part 2 of the psalms of ascent (if you did not read yesterday, I encourage you to read through all the psalms of ascent (Psalms 120-134 today). As people journeyed dozens or hundreds of miles up towards Jerusalem, they would have continuously repeated these psalms. Repetition is the key to learning. When the people came to Psalm 128, it was a reminder that blessing is not found in material possessions but in a right relationship with God. Further, Psalms 129 and 130 reminds us ultimate deliverance and hope come not from changed circumstances, but from the hand of God. It is God alone who offers forgiveness and redemption from our greatest enemy, sin.
Then the psalms of ascent end with a focus on a concern for God's greatness and glory, over our ease and comfort. Rather than focusing on building our own kingdoms, we are to focus on God’s glory and bringing his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. As the pilgrims walked toward Jerusalem and as we walk around today, we should continuously remind ourselves of God's greatness and glory. Life is not about our fame; instead it is about proclaiming the greatness of God to everyone we can.
Father God, give me eyes to see your greatness above everything. Help me to remember that life is about your glory and not my own comfort. Help me to pursue you rather than inferior things today. Amen.
Which psalm of ascent will you meditate on to remind yourself of God’s greatness today?
