Daniel 4:1-37; 2 Peter 1:1-21; Psalm 119:97-112; Proverbs 28:17-18

Every time I go for a run everything within me wants to stop. Running is hard and I always question why I am doing it. No one is chasing me, so maybe I should stop! A similar sensation may happen to us when we are following God. There may be moments when it seems difficult when we wonder whether it is worth it or if we can even keep going. It is these people that 2 Peter is written to.

Peter wants people who are discouraged to understand that regardless of the opposition they can follow God. This ability isn't from their strength but has been given to them by God. "His divine power has given us everything we need." Since we have the ability through the Spirit to follow God we should persevere. Twice Peter encourages his readers to "make every effort" to keep going. He knows that we are prone to quit but he wants us to understand what is at stake. Peter is like a cheerleader reminding us that we should keep going.

An example of failing to seek God is found in Nebuchadnezzar. He praises God one moment and then praises himself the next. He becomes more enamored by himself than God and reaps the grave consequences of his choices. He fails to persevere in following God while we are called to be those who keep going and continually put God first.

Father God, help me to keep my eyes on you. Help me to always remember the life that is found in you and to remember the sacrifice of your Son. Give me the strength to finish life well, in following you. Amen.

Question: What can you do to ensure that you persevere in following God?
