Song 1:1-8:14

Song of Songs is one of two books in the Bible that does not mention God. That may seem strange that there is even one book that does not explicitly speak about God, but, even when his name is not mentioned, God is there. For example, as Song of Songs describes a love relationship, it cannot help but remind us of God's love for us. The book is a masterful description of the beauty, intensity, and power of love between a man and a woman. It describes several ingredients that are vital for a healthy marriage: exclusivity, encouragement, physical intimacy, and intentionality. Yet like the whole Bible, it is meant to make us consider not only ourselves but God.

Though God is not mentioned, we are reminded of the way that God desires an exclusive relationship with us and does not want to share us with other gods. We remember the way that God encourages us despite our sin and waywardness. We remember that God desires an intimate relationship with us and, with a costly intentionality, makes this relationship possible. As we consider Song of Songs, we should celebrate the beauty of romance and marriage, while also celebrating the love that God has for us.

Father God, thank you for your love for me. When I feel insecure, remind me that I am loved. Help my relationships to reflect the love you have shown me. Amen.

If you are married, how can you better reflect the values of Song of Songs in your marriage? Regardless of your marital status, how can you better remember God's love for you?
