Proverbs 1:1-4:27

Our culture is focused on the accumulation of knowledge, but what about the acquisition of wisdom? People accumulate multiple degrees, but this pursuit rarely leads to greater skill in living. Solomon asked for wisdom above all else, and God provided it. He then was to walk in this personal wisdom and communicate it to others. Over the next week we will sit at Solomon’s feet and listen as he provides wisdom to his son. One of the most surprising pieces of wisdom is the centrality of "the fear of the Lord." We may feel like this phrase is something relegated to the Old Testament, but Acts 9:31 describes the early church as "living in the fear of the Lord" and 2 Corinthians 5:11, with other passages, calls us to fear the Lord.

So, if this is a foundational ingredient for wisdom, what does it mean? It means acknowledging and living in response to the greatness of God. It is a recognition that God holds all the power in the universe, and we do not. Putting God in the right place in our lives helps us put everything else in the right order. If we get his greatness and the fear of the Lord right, then it will help us to be wise.

Father God, help me to understand your greatness, power, love and acceptance. Help me to see you, know you, love you, and fear you. Amen.

How should a right fear of God transform all the other fears with which you wrestle?
