2 Samuel 7:1-17; 1 Chronicles 17:1-15; 2 Samuel 7:18-29; 1 Chronicles 17:16-27; 2 Samuel 8:1-14; 1 Chronicles 18:1-13; Psalm 60
Forever is a long time! In today's reading God makes a promise to David that his family would have a forever kingdom. Compare this forever kingdom to the longest earthly kingdoms. The Empire of Japan lasted less than 2000 years, Rome lasted less than a 1000 years, and America is still an infant. Yet God promises David a forever kingdom. As we will see throughout Kings and Chronicles, this kingdom will have pauses, but it will last forever.
As you consider an eternal kingdom, the most logical way for this to occur is for there to be an eternal king, and that is exactly the case. Since Jesus is eternal, he will rule forever and be the ultimate fulfillment of this promise. When God makes a promise, he is always faithful to fulfill it. Jesus is now and always will be our eternal king. This does not mean we will not have rough days, as we see expressed in Psalm 60, but it does mean we have a good king who will rule over us, and over the world forever. Praise be to the King of Kings.
Father God, thank you for the perfect king we have in your Jesus. Thank you that in him we have a king who cares and has the power to destroy all the evil and sin in the world. Help me to let him rule over every part of my life as I participate in his kingdom work today. Amen.
What are some of the implications of us currently having a king who will rule forever?
