1 Peter 5:12-14; 2 Peter 1:1-3:18

What is your first memory? Maybe a gift you got as a child, a family vacation, or an awards ceremony. In Peter’s second letter, he wants his readers to understand the importance of memories. We must remember the things we have been taught. In 1:12 Peter says his mission is to remind the church of the things they have learned, then in 1:13 he says he must refresh their memory, and finally in 3:2 he wants them to recall his words. Peter understood that we all suffer from spiritual amnesia. We are prone because of sin and false teachers to forget the central truths of our faith. Therefore, we need to remember what we have been taught. We can do this through memorization, consistent Bible reading (which you’re doing now!), corporate worship, prayer, and rejecting the lies we hear.

This may seem obvious, but Peter says that eternity hangs in the balance. Those who reject these truths will be separated from God for eternity, while those who embrace them will dwell forever on a new earth. So let us keep listening, keep believing, and keep remembering God’s truths. We need to remind ourselves repeatedly of what Christ has done for us and how this should transform our lives.

Father God, help me to remember your truths. When I am bombarded by lies, help me to know what is true and cling to those things. Amen.

How can you recall more clearly God’s truths?
