Hebrews 8:1-10:39

Jesus is not only superior to all prophets, priests, and kings, but he also brought a superior covenant. A covenant is God's way of relating to his people and Jesus brought a new way of doing this. The old covenant, which is another way of describing the Mosaic covenant, is inferior to that of Jesus'. Through the new covenant God promises to "put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people" (Hebrews 8:10). The new covenant was able to completely eradicate sin, which the old covenant could not. The old covenant is described as "external regulations applying until the time of the new order" (Hebrews 9:10). Therefore, the new covenant is better not only because it eradicates sin, but in doing so, goes deeper, transforming our very hearts.

Our response to this new covenant should be to "draw near to God" (Hebrews 10:22). Since we are now made clean through the sacrifice of Jesus, we must make sure we are utilizing the new opportunity for intimacy we have with God. We can go right into the Most Holy Place anytime we want. Jesus allows us to go to the Father so do not let anything keep you from doing this today.

Father God, thank you that I can draw near to you through the work, sacrifice, and covenant that Jesus brought. Help me never get tired of spending time with you and enjoying your presence. Amen.

What excuses do you make for not drawing near to God with the frequency and intentionality that you should?
