Hebrews 4:14-7:28

As we continue looking at Jesus' superiority in Hebrews, we discover that Jesus is the superior priest. In at least four areas, he supersedes the work of all previous priests. First, he is better because he is without sin and thus does not need to make sacrifices for himself. Second, he is permanently in God's presence versus high priests who were only able to enter the Most Holy Place once a year. Third, he is a permanent high priest for us. All other priests died and ceased their intercession, but, since Jesus rose from the dead, he continually intercedes on our behalf before the Father. Fourth and finally, his offering was one time for all sin. He does not need to continually offer sacrifices in the morning and evening like old covenant priests; instead, he has offered himself on the cross to bring about our purification.

Jesus is the priest we always needed because he is holy, present with the Father, permanent, and offered the perfect, sufficient sacrifice for our sins. So when the readers of Hebrews were tempted to go back to inferior priests, they needed to remember Christ’s greatness. When we are tempted to look to things other than Christ, we also need to remember his superiority over everything and turn to him.

Father God, thank you for your Son. Thank you that he offered himself as the perfect sacrifice that I need. Help me to live for him today. Amen.

What practical difference should knowing Jesus is your perfect, eternal high priest make in your life today?
