Psalm 1-2, 10, 33, 71, 91
Due to our fallen nature, we have a natural bent towards throwing off authority. If you doubt this, be sensitive to your emotions the next time you are asked to do something you do not want to do. Or watch a kid throw a tantrum when they are asked to perform a small task they dislike. Or consider the founding of our country, which we celebrated a couple days ago, and our removal of the British monarchy. Many psalms challenge us to consider the way we interact with our ultimate authority, God. The nations of the world desire to live by their own authority, but what God wants is for us to "kiss his son (Jesus)" (Psalms 2:12).
We are to love submitting to God since his ways lead us to abundant life. We are told in Psalm 33 "blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance." We are to live recognizing God as our king and us as his servants. What joy it should bring knowing we can serve God with our lives rather than thinking we must be in control of everything. As Psalm 71 says he is to be our refuge, our deliverer, our hope, our help, our salvation, and the one on whom we rely. He is to be in control of every part of our lives, and we are to follow him where he takes us. Do not rebel or resist, instead submit.
Father God, help me to submit my ways before you. Help me to bring every part of my life under your authority and be led by you. Amen.
How do you see a rebellious spirit at work in your life?
