Mark 9:30-10:12

Who is the greatest person you have ever met? Is it a celebrity, a financial guru, a powerful CEO? The way we conceive of greatness, especially as a culture, is profoundly different from Jesus’ view. This is why Jesus came to earth not only as Lord, savior, and king, but also as a teacher. He came as a teacher because we are prone to embrace lies rather than truth.

Mark 9 describes one of Jesus’ private teaching sessions with his disciples. He wanted them to understand that his greatness would be revealed in his suffering and death; that his victory would be secured through his murder. The disciples could not grasp this idea. The disciples missed Jesus’ teaching to such a degree that they were soon arguing over which of them was the greatest, using the world’s definition. So, Jesus had to teach them a second time that greatness is found in small acts like welcoming children, pursuing unity, shepherding children, pursuing holiness, and faithfulness in marriage. We are drawn to the miraculous, amazing, and spectacular, but Jesus reminds us that greatness is revealed in the mundane, ordinary, and in perseverance. So, let us learn to walk in true greatness. Let us learn to pursue the path of Jesus and walk in the greatness of obedience, suffering, service, and love.

Father God, make me teachable. Help me to conform my life to your ways and to your definition of greatness. Amen.

How can you more clearly conform your life to Jesus’ definition of greatness?
