Mark 8:11-38

It is so easy to miss the point. You can hear a sermon and walk away failing to grasp what it is all about. Or maybe you feel like that after reading the Bible. Many people who experienced Jesus in the flesh missed the point. The Pharisees were so fixated on trying to trick Jesus with theological riddles that they failed to come to grips with who he was. The disciples were often so fixated on the physical that they missed out on the spiritual truths of Jesus. When Jesus quizzed his disciples, they claimed that most people thought he was John the Baptist, Elijah, or simply a prophet. Finally, when Jesus teaches that he will die, Peter rebukes him. Peter missed the point.

To illustrate this idea Jesus healed a blind man in two stages. First, he rubbed spit into his eyes, but when the man looked at people, he thought they were walking trees. Then Jesus placed his damp hands on his eyes a second time and he could see completely. Jesus’ miracles were meant to tangibly show how many people needed to have their spiritual eyes opened. All those who missed the point, the Pharisees, the crowd, and even the disciples─needed to be able to see. So, are you missing the point. Is your life focused on God, his kingdom, and his glory, or your own desires? Are you focused on Jesus or yourself ? Let us not be people who end our lives having missed the point; instead, let us live conformed to the likeness of Christ.

Father God, help me to live focused on you and your glory. Amen.

How would God define the point of your life? How can you live in a way where you are not missing the point?
