Mark 7:1-23

Proverbs 21:11 compares our hearts to a river. Our desires, pursuits, and longings are flowing in a direction; the only question is where. Our spiritual heart health determines so much of our lives that it is critical we consistently evaluate it. The Pharisees were fixated on externals while Jesus’ focus was on the heart. Jesus is concerned about motivations, desires, and thoughts, while the Pharisees were only concerned with actions. In focusing on what they could see, they missed out on the most important issues─issues of the heart.

So, where is your heart? What are your motivations, desires, and thoughts? If you could find the direction of your heart on Google maps, what would it be heading towards? We can look like good, religious Christians and yet our location be extremely far from Jesus. Jesus said of the Pharisees that their “hearts are far from me.” They were going through the religious motions, but their hearts were distant from God. So how can you move your heart closer to Jesus? Examine your heart. Acknowledge to God where your heart is and commit to moving closer to him today. As our hearts draw near to God then the result will be beautiful fruit that flows out of it.

Father God, help me to draw near to you. Help me desire you more than anything else. Amen.

What is one step you can take to move your heart closer to God?
