Mark 9:1-29
Jesus came to Earth with power. Despite looking physically like any other Jewish man, he continually demonstrated his unparalleled power. He performed miracles, he revealed supreme knowledge and wisdom, and he asserted his control over creation. In Mark 9, his power was revealed in the transfiguration as he became "dazzling white." Then his power was again shown when he cast a demon out of a boy. The disciples were unable to cast out the demon, but Jesus could. His power was revealed as greater than anyone else. People who rely on themselves are unable to do what Jesus alone can.
One of the amazing truths of Scripture is Jesus does not keep his power to himself but makes it available to us through prayer. The disciples were unable to cast out the demon because they failed to pray. If they had called out for God’s power, they would have received it and would have been able to exorcise the demon. If we want to experience God's power, then we need to become people who are committed to prayer. We need to rely on God and not ourselves. We need to call out to God for him to work, rather than drawing on our own resources. Power is in God, and we desperately need him, so let us be people who are continually asking God to work in and through us. Let us serve out of the power of God and not out of our own abilities.
Father God, help me to rely on you. Help me to rely on your power to do that which only you can do. Amen.
How much are you relying on God versus yourself ? How can you learn to rely on God more through prayer?
