Mark 10:32-52
So often we miss what God is doing. We are so busy and consumed by our own agendas that we miss the larger, more beautiful work that God is performing. In Mark 10:32-52, Jesus heads toward Jerusalem and announces that he is walking into his arrest, condemnation, abuse, and death. The disciples seem to completely miss the meaning of his words. They, like us, are so consumed by their thoughts they fail to see what Jesus is doing in their midst. James and John respond to Jesus’ pronouncement about his imminent death by asking for positions at Jesus' right and left in his kingdom. There is no acknowledgment of what Jesus has said, instead they move forcefully ahead with what they want. They miss the bigger thing that God is doing because they are focused on themselves. Jesus has to rebuke them and remind them that his kingdom values do not match with the world’s.
The only person who seems to have eyes to see what God is doing is the blind man Bartimaeus. He understands the power of Jesus, he understands that Jesus is his only hope, and he is the one who does not care about cultural politeness when it might be possible to get his attention. Having eyes to see what God is doing has nothing to do with our physical sight but everything to do with a heart that is sensitive to God's work. May we have lives that see what God is doing and join him in his work.
Father God, help me to see what you are doing in my life so I can praise you, and in the world, so I can join you. Amen.
What would help you to better see and understand what God is doing in and around you?
