Romans 9:1-24
How well do you love people? Paul, in living out God’s love, gives us a powerful model of what love looks like. Romans 9:3 says, “I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers…” Paul would be willing to go to hell and be separated from God for all eternity if that meant Jewish people would come to faith. That is love! He would be willing to give up heaven in order that others might be with God. Do you have even a fraction of that sacrificial love in you? If we have experienced God’s love, grace, mercy, and salvation, then it should well up within us powerful displays of love and sacrifice for others.
This love which Paul has for his people is ultimately a shadow of the love which Jesus has for everyone (though the focus of chapters 9-11 is on Israel). Jesus was willing to be forsaken by the Father, die a gruesome death, experience death for three days, and take the weight of the sins of the world upon himself out of love. He essentially experienced what Paul described in verse 3. He was cut off from the Father for us. What powerful love Jesus has for us and what powerful love we are called in response to the love we have received.
Father God, thank you that I am loved by you. Thank you that through your sovereign election I am part of your family. Help me to love others in a way that reflects your love. Amen.
What will it look like for you to embrace a sacrificial love for others today?
