Mark 13:14-37
Christ is returning! We need to embrace this truth and live in light of it. Jesus instructs his disciples about his return to, "Be on guard! Be alert!...Watch!" The urgency of these commands comes from the reality Jesus is coming back. Nearly every generation has thought Jesus would return during their time, and though every previous generation has been wrong, one will be right. So, we need to live in light of his return and the end of all things. It can be hard to keep Christ’s return embedded in our minds, when everyday seems the same as the one before. We wake up, go to work (or not), interact with others, eat a few meals, and then go to sleep. A similar set of routines occurs the next day.
The monotony of life can cause us to spiritually fall asleep, but Jesus calls us to take on a very different perspective. He wants us to understand and live out of the reality that Christ is going to break into our world with power and glory and gather his elect. All that we do should be done with our eyes focused on this fact. He may come today, or it may be tomorrow, or it may be a thousand years from now, but this reality should change our lives today. Nothing is mundane when it is done for God's glory, so be on guard, be alert, and watch. Keep your eyes open, keep your heart softened to things of God, and stay awake to what God is doing.
Father God, help me to live considering Jesus’ return. Help me to be on guard, alert, and watchful in the way I go about my day. Amen.
What is one way you can be on guard, alert, and watchful regarding Christ’s return this week?
