Ephesians 2:1-22
Everyone loves a good transformation story. The nerdy girl who becomes prom queen, the pauper who becomes a prince, and the underdog who becomes champions. All of these are ultimately a shadow of the greatest transformation story of our time, the story of us.
Ephesians 2 describes the radical story of how God has transformed us. Before faith in Christ, we were dead in our transgressions and sins, lived only gratifying our sinful nature, and were headed toward wrath. Further, we were separated from Christ, excluded from citizenship, and distanced to God’s hope. That would be the ugliest before transformation photo ever but one that is eclipsed by the beauty of the after photo. Through Christ we are now alive, saved, “raised up with Christ and seated with him in the heavenly realms,” objects of God’s grace, his workmanship, brought near to God, reconciled, and filled with peace. The contrast between this before and after, could not be further apart.
As we consider God’s transforming power in our lives, we need to constantly remember who we are in Christ and live out of this new, beautiful, eternal identity. Who Christ has made us should transform our perspective, attitude, and the way we live. May we contemplate today the true beauty of what Jesus has done for us and celebrate how changed we are.
Father God, thank you that I am your child, can draw near to you, and continuously receive your grace. Amen.
