Mark 14:1-21
What are the things which you value above everything else? If there was a fire in your house and you could only grab one thing, what would you take with you? The things we value will very much determine the way we live. As Jesus heads towards his death the disciples reveal something they value more than him. They value money over Jesus in being indignant toward the woman who poured the perfume over his head. Then, Judas reveals his obsession with money in being willing to betray Jesus for silver. With only a few days left with Jesus on Earth, they should have been focused on him, but their attention was elsewhere. They were present with Jesus, but their hearts were far away. Instead of adoring Jesus, they had become obsessed with the things of this world.
As we live, our hearts should be connected to the beauty of Christ. We should learn to love what he loves and hate what he hates. We should learn that true satisfaction comes from him and not from anything this world can offer. If we have Jesus and nothing of the world, we can be satisfied, while an extravagant life without Jesus will always leave us empty. So let us allow our hearts to be conformed to Jesus’ and allow our desires to be for him above anything else.
Father God, help me to value you above everything else. Help me to be content with you no matter what the world throws at me. Amen.
How can you learn to value Jesus more than anything else?
