Galatians 5:13-26
“Are you going to make it?” In a stupid, rash decision my spouse and I decided to run up a down escalator in a local store. We both started out on a run, but midway we slowed to a walk, and a few steps from the top we were panting and straining to make that next step before the escalator reversed our progress. Oh, to be young again!
Paul spends much of Galatians describing the Christian life. We know when we accepted Christ as our Savior we died to sin and our old way of life. We know we are freed from the rules of the law. We know we are free to live a new way by the Spirit. Yet how often do we take a step, only to go backwards on the escalator into our old habits of living for self, instead of being spirit-controlled? Galatians 5:19-21 describes that life style. In contrast, verse 25 says living by the Spirit is to keep in step with the Spirit. In other words, as we walk through life, we are to rely on the escalator (the Spirit) to move us forward in the Spiritcontrolled life. We are called to walk step-by-step in reliance on his power to resist the attitudes/actions of the self and to produce his fruits.
Father, I am so prone to go backwards on the escalator and commit the Galatians 5 self-controlled actions/attitudes. Help me to rely on the Spirit’s power as I interact with others. May I love others as I love myself. Amen.
What self-centered actions need to be put away as we rely on the Spirit to produce his fruit?
