Romans 8:26-39
I was talking with someone recently who experienced fear because they did not have eternal security. Our conversation led to the conclusion that either our salvation has been secured through the work of Jesus, or it is up to us. If it is our responsibility to hold on to our salvation, then there is lots of room for fear and uncertainty. If it is based on the finished work of Jesus, then we can have absolute assurance and confidence.
This is the argument Paul makes in Romans 8. God wants us to understand that regardless of our present circumstances our salvation is secure. We do not need to walk in fear because of God’s unchanging character and his work. Verse 27 tells us the Holy Spirit is continually interceding on our behalf. Verses 28-30 remind us that God will finish the work of salvation he has begun. Verses 31-39 say God is for us; therefore, we do not have to worry about anything separating us from him. Since salvation is initiated by God, available through him, and completed by his power, we are secure. No earthly security matches the confidence we can have in knowing we are God’s child and saved.
Father God, thank you that I am your child because of what Christ did for me on the cross. Help me to live in response to the eternal security I have in you. Amen.
