Hebrews 7:18-28

When Jesus came, he fulfilled the old covenant so he could enter into a new relationship/covenant with his people. This covenant was promised in the Old Testament and was brought into existence through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. It is through this new covenant that we can fully “draw near to God.” Under the old covenant the ability to draw near was limited, but through our new priest Jesus we can always draw near. Since we have uninterrupted access to God are you utilizing that? Are you consistently praying to God and prioritizing your relationship with him?

Jesus not only brought a better covenant but lived a better life than anyone else could. He is “holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.” Jesus is perfect and everything we need. He is the way to the Father and the one who eternally intercedes for us. All other priests were imperfect and momentary, while Jesus is eternal. They had to always make a sacrifice for themselves because of their sin while Jesus was able to be our perfect sacrifice.

Therefore, we need to remember what Jesus has done for us and utilize his gift by drawing near to God. Failing to come near is failing to take Jesus’ work seriously. So let us daily, continually, and regularly draw near to God in worship, prayer, and service.

Father God, thank you that I can draw near to you. Thank you that I can do so by the work of Jesus and through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

What would a life of continually drawing near to God look like?
