Hebrews 5:1-14
Hebrews 5 tells us that all of us are called to be teachers. We have been taught the truths of Christ so we can teach others. So, what are the things we should teach?
One of the things we are to understand and teach is that Jesus is our high priest. Jesus' world was filled with priests. Some priests served in the Jewish temple, and a myriad of priests in pagan temples throughout the world. When I traveled to India I saw this same culture. People who offered their services and claimed they could take you to God. As we read Hebrews 5, we discover that what these false priests cannot do, Jesus can. He is the ultimate and true high priest who can be a mediator between God and man. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and there is no other means to God except through him. He uniquely performs these actions because of who he is (both God and man) and because of what he has done (his death is the “source of eternal salvation”).
Jesus as our priest means we can rest in his work, pray in his name, and share him with others. All that Christ has done for us should lead us to lives focused on him. So let us know him and his truth so we can teach others.
Father God, thank you that Jesus is my high priest. Help me to utilize what Jesus has done for me and share these truths with others. Amen.
Why is Jesus being our high priest a core truth of the gospel?
