Hebrews 4:1-16
Rest is an elusive concept for most of us. We find ourselves running around like chickens with our heads cut off, and when we have a moment without work, we often fill the time with something that can’t provide real rest. We bingewatch Netflix, scroll social media, and surf the internet, but find ourselves as exhausted as before. In contrast, Jesus offers us true rest both now and for all eternity. Jesus promises rest now for all who come to him by faith. So, how do we experience this rest?
Hebrews 4 tells us that those “who have believed enter that rest.” When we come to faith in Christ, we have entered Christ’s rest. We are positionally in a place of rest, but are you experiencing it? Are you enjoying the rest of God that leads to peace, joy, and the understanding that all we need for salvation has already been accomplished for us? This rest has already been given to you, so what keeps you from it?
Not only is rest a present reality for believers, but it will also be our eternal condition. Going on a vacation, taking a nap, or reading a book may be a taste of rest, but the ultimate experience isn’t available through earthly activities; rather, it is a gift from Christ. So, the next time you feel exhausted, worn out, stressed, and anxious, turn to the rest giver.
Father God, help me look to you for rest. Thank you that I can walk in your rest now and will for all eternity. Help me to experience the gift of your rest today. Amen.
How can you more intentionally experience God’s rest today?
